On July 4, 1939, one of the saddest days in baseball history took place. It was Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day at Yankee Stadium and teammates were gathered around to say farewell to their friend. A trophy was presented to Lou Gehrig that day and the poem below was enscribed upon it.

"When you have a wife who has been a tower of strength and shown more courage than you dreamed existed, that's the finest I know." - Lou Gehrig

To LOU GEHRIG

We've been to the wars together;
We took our foes as they came;
And always you were the leader,
And ever you played the game.
Idol of cheering millions,
Records are yours by sheaves;
Iron of frame they hailed you
Decked you with laurel leaves.
But higher than that we hold you,
We who have known you best;
Knowing the way you came through
Every human test.
Let this be a silent token
Of lasting Friendship's gleam,
And all that we've left unspoken;
Your Pals of the Yankees Team.

Poem on Lou Gehrig's Award by John Kiernan

A poignant drama unfolded in the background (or is it really the foreground) of the homecoming football game on 15-OCT-2011 as alumni from the classes of 1974-1975 emerged victorious to establish who sets the pace for dedicated and inspiring tail'gate parties.

Victorious

Not captured well in this static photo is the fact that this soon-to-be legendary tail'gate made a statement of estethic strength and beauty rivaled only by the marble legacy of antiquity...

During the game, a steady rain was driven into the eyes of indefatigable fans by sustained winds of 15 to 30 MPH with gusts up to 50 MPH (http://www.fox23news.com/weather/alertdetail.aspx?DetailID=1477811). Fortunately, ponchos (price estimates escalating rapidly) were made available to soggy onlookers through the largesse of JMB ('74).

The "mental toughness" of the Raiders, and the steady hand of a 4th string quarterback, enabled them to overcome numerous injuries to survive a valiant comeback by the Big Red and provide a thrilling homecoming victory to a loyal following in the stands and to a more pragmatic throng in the Colgate Inn.

A medical professional on hand at the Colgate Inn advised the Raiders to take more vitamins.

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Jordan McCord scored on a 4-yard touchdown run in the first overtime for Colgate, and the Raiders held Cornell scoreless on their possession in the extra frame to come away with a 38-25 win on Saturday.

McCord, who also played on the defensive side of the ball and notched an interception, got the ball three straight times after a pass interference penalty set Colgate (4-3) up first-and-goal at the 5 in overtime. His last carry was the game winner, and he finished with 87 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the win.

The Big Red (2-3) got the ball back for their scoring chance, but stalled on the 4-yard line when Jeff Mathews' pass to Lucas Shapiro fell incomplete on fourth-and-4.

Colgate led by as much as 28-17 with 10 minutes left in the third quarter, but Cornell forced OT by scoring 11 points in the final 1:52 of regulation.
